How do I handle a full custom S3 storage bucket?

If your custom S3-compatible storage bucket runs out of space, your site’s functionality may be affected. Here’s what happens and how to resolve the issue.

What happens when your bucket runs out of space?

  1. File uploads fail:
  1. You won’t be able to upload new files to your site until you free up space in your bucket.
  1. Site performance issues:
  1. If your site relies on dynamically generated files or frequent updates, it may experience errors or slowdowns.
  1. No automatic notifications:
  1. Hostjar.io does not monitor the storage usage of your custom S3 bucket, so you won’t receive alerts when it’s full.

How to resolve the issue

  1. Free up space:
  1. Delete unnecessary files from your S3 bucket to free up storage.
  2. Use your storage provider’s management tools to identify and remove large or unused files.
  1. Increase storage capacity:
  1. Upgrade your storage plan with your S3 provider to increase the bucket’s capacity.
  2. If you’re using Amazon S3, consider enabling S3 Lifecycle Policies to automatically delete old files.
  1. Switch to built-in storage:
  1. If managing custom storage becomes challenging, you can switch to Hostjar.io’s built-in storage during site creation.
